Welcome to the first part of your orthodontic treatment.  Today you received blue elastics called separators.  The separators are placed between your teeth to open a little space which is necessary for your next appointment.

It takes 3-10 days for the spaces to open up.  During this time, you should avoid foods such as gum, caramel, gummy bears, etc.  Try not to pick at the separators even if they feel strange.  Do not floss your back teeth: however, brush them thoroughly to keep them clean.

If your separators fall out, please call the office for an appointment to replace them.

Most likely, your teeth will be tender the first few days.   Pain relievers such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen are advised to reduce discomfort.  Eat soft foods such as pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes or spaghetti.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any problems or questions.
